Q: I called the fire station and no one answered the phone. If there’s no one at the station, how do you know when you have an emergency call?
A: The Fire Department does not stay at the station and wait for calls to come in. There are numerous reasons that the Firefighters may not be at the station; they may be on another call, training, doing equipment maintenance, or they may be at the station and just unable to answer the phone. All Fire Department personnel have personal pagers, radios, and alarms in the station that alert them to a call. That is why you should always call 9-1-1 if you believe there is an emergency. Dialing 9-1-1 is the quickest way for firefighters to respond to your emergency.

A: The insurance rating is determined by Insurance Services Organization (ISO). ISO concluded its review of the fire suppression features being provided for/by the Bluffton Township Fire District in January 2012.  The resulting community classification is Class 3/9.  The criteria per the ISO evaluation of 2012 indicates that:
•Any property within the Bluffton Township Fire District that is within five road miles of a Bluffton fire station and within 1000 feet of a fire hydrant is a PPC three.
•Any property within five road miles but does not have a fire hydrant or other recognized source of water for fire protection within 1000 feet is a PPC nine.
•Any property outside of five road miles whether it has a water distribution system for fire protection or not is a PPC ten.
All ISO - PPC inquiries within the Bluffton Township Fire District should first be obtained officially through the ISO offices at 800-444-4554. For more information regarding ISO Classification, please click here: http://www.blufftonfd.com/iso.php

Q: Can I burn trash, leaves, or trimmings, at my house or business?
A: To obtain a burn permit please contact the Fire Marshal’s Office at 843-757-2800 ext. 7701. According to Beaufort County Ordinance, open burning is defined as the outdoor burning of leaves, tree branches, yard trimmings, clippings, and other natural vegetation. Open burning must be located no less than seventy-five (75) feet from any structure or road. The ordinance does not restrict open burning in connection with preparation of food for consumption, campfires, or other like fires intended solely for recreational purposes. If burning in the Town of Bluffton limits, you must obtain a burn permit for all outdoor burning with the exemption of approved outdoor fireplaces, food smoking units, outdoor cooking stoves and/or grills. Authorization to burn must also be obtained from the South Carolina Forestry Commission (1-800-895-7062) prior to ignition of the fire. Commercial burning is always prohibited unless you have special permission from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).

Q: How do I know if there is a ban on burning?
A: Burning bans are usually announced on the local news channels. You can also call the South Carolina Forestry Commission at 1-800-895-7062. Even if there is not a ban on burning, please use good judgment about burning in dry and/or windy conditions, and always be prepared before burning by having rakes and garden hoses nearby.
