Founded in 1978, Bluffton Township Fire District proudly serves communities across 246 square miles of Beaufort County, South Carolina. We are located just 12 miles from Hilton Head Island and 20 miles from Savannah, Georgia—surrounded by coastal marshes, creeks, lagoons, pine forests, and historic lowcountry neighborhoods.

  • Community risk reduction
  • Fire prevention and education

Our operations run 24/7 on a three-shift system (24 on / 48 off) with a minimum of 39 personnel on duty per shift. We operate nine strategically placed fire stations, including:

  • 3 ALS Engine companies
  • 6 BLS Engine companies
  • A dedicated Truck company
  • A Heavy Rescue company
  • 2 Battalion Chiefs

Headquarters (Station 35) also deploys additional district-wide assets including a truck, rescue, engine, and battalion team with specialized training and resources for complex incidents.

Training & Special Teams

BTFD responds to nearly 11,000 calls annually, with about 75% being EMS-related. All firefighters are required to become National Registry EMTs within their first year of employment.

Many of our team members also serve on regional Hazardous Materials or Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) teams in collaboration with neighboring departments.

"I have no ambition in this world but one, and that is to be a firefighter. The position may, in the eyes of some, appear to be a lowly one; but we, who know the work which the firefighter has to do, believe that it is a noble calling. Our proudest moment is to save lives."

– Chief Edward F. Croker, FDNY, circa 1910
