Bluffton, SC – (April 16, 2025) – Bluffton Township Fire District responded to two residential fire incidents on Saturday, April 13, 2025. While no injuries were reported in either case, both incidents highlight the importance of battery safety and chimney maintenance in preventing residential fires.
The first fire occurred just after 4:15 p.m. on Hartwell Road. A neighbor noticed smoke coming from a nearby garage and alerted the residents, who were unaware of the fire at the time. The neighbor acted quickly, using a garden hose to knock down the flames before firefighters arrived to take over and complete extinguishment. The fire was contained to the garage and resulted in minor fire extension and smoke damage. Fire investigators determined the cause to be accidental, the result of lithium-ion batteries entering a dangerous condition called thermal runaway—a chain reaction where the batteries overheat, break down, and eventually catch fire.
The second fire took place later that evening, around 7:50 p.m. on Corley Street. Fire crews responded to reports of flames visible from the top of an outdoor fireplace chimney. The fireplace, part of a covered patio area, had ignited a wooden structure surrounding the chimney. The fire was brought under control before it could spread to the main home. Fire investigators determined the cause to be accidental, due to a malfunction inside the chimney that allowed heat or flames to reach flammable materials in the upper structure.
“These two very different fires in a single day show how everyday items—like rechargeable batteries or outdoor fireplaces—can become fire hazards if not used or maintained properly,” said Acting Fire Chief Derek Church. “We’re especially grateful for the neighbor who noticed the garage fire and took action. Their quick thinking likely prevented a more serious outcome.”
The Bluffton Township Fire District encourages all residents to take the following precautions:
- Lithium-Ion Battery Safety: Never leave batteries charging unattended. Once fully charged, unplug devices. Avoid using batteries that have been dropped, damaged, or show signs of swelling or overheating. Always charge in a well-ventilated area away from combustible materials.
- Chimney and Fireplace Safety: Whether indoor or outdoor, chimneys should be professionally inspected and cleaned at least once a year. Buildup of creosote or other debris inside the flue can catch fire and spread to nearby structures.
