Bluffton, SC – (December 24, 2024) – A fire that broke out yesterday afternoon destroyed a historic 1800s-era home located on Bridge Street in Old Town Bluffton. The fire was initially reported at about 5:30 p.m. as a fire on the back porch of the residence. Upon arrival, fire crews from Bluffton Township Fire District (BTFD) stations 30, 31, 33, and 35 found heavy fire on the back side involving both floors of the two-story structure. The front side showed no active flames, but heavy smoke was visible, while the right side had visible flames through windows.
Despite an aggressive firefighting effort, frequent wind gusts fueled the flames and made suppression difficult. Firefighters conducted defensive operations by stretching lines to both the rear and front of the structure. Crews from three engine companies, a quint, ladder truck, and heavy rescue worked to contain the fire, with support from Beaufort County EMS and the Bluffton Police Department. Battalion Chiefs from BTFD stations 35 and 38 provided oversight during the operation.
Bluffton Township Fire District Fire Chief Paul Boulware and Assistant Chief of Operations Adam Corn were on scene during the firefighting efforts. Chief Boulware commented, “Our team responded quickly and worked tirelessly in challenging conditions to prevent further damage to neighboring homes. Although the loss of this historic structure is devastating, we are thankful that everyone was able to evacuate safely.”
Several other homes close to the residence were evacuated as a precaution due to concerns with two large propane tanks on the property. The evacuation was completed safely, and firefighters remained on scene throughout the night to extinguish hot spots and ensure no additional homes were threatened.
The owner of the home was out of town at the time of the fire, and fortunately, the family members who were staying at the residence were able to get out safely. No injuries were reported. The family is currently staying with nearby relatives and friends.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time while the Fire Marshal’s Office continues its investigation into the incident.
The house, part of the original Bluffton Township footprint, was a significant structure within the area, surrounded by several other historic homes. The loss of this landmark has deeply impacted the community, and the Bluffton Township Fire District extends its condolences to those affected by the fire.
