Start With the Basics
Emergency Kits & Evacuation Plans Save Lives. Are You Ready?
The Bluffton Township Fire District is committed to helping our community prepare for emergencies—before disaster strikes. From hurricanes and flooding to unexpected evacuations, readiness begins with a plan tailored to your household.
Step 1: Build an Emergency Kit
A well-stocked kit should sustain your household for at least 72 hours. Here’s what to include:
- Regional road maps
- First aid supplies
- NOAA Weather Radio
- Extra charging cords and power banks
- Prescription medications and copies of critical documents
- Food and water (1 gallon per person per day)
- Flashlights with extra batteries
- Toiletries and sanitation supplies
- Pet supplies (food, water, leash, carrier, medications)

Step 2: Make a Family Communication Plan
Emergencies often separate loved ones. Create a communication plan that ensures everyone stays informed and connected:
- Designate an out-of-town contact for check-ins
- Share your plan with extended family
- Ensure everyone knows how to text or call if other methods fail
- Practice your plan with your household
- Keep a printed copy in your emergency kit
Step 3: Know Your Home and Its Surroundings
Evaluate your location and home risks:
- Are you in a flood zone?
- Are there nearby creeks or rivers prone to overflow?
- Is your house number clearly visible from the road?
- What are your evacuation route options?
- Are local shelters or hotels pet-friendly?
Step 4: Plan Your Evacuation Route
Decide ahead of time:
- Where will you go? (Friends, relatives, hotel inland?)
- Does your destination allow pets?
- Do you have backup options if your first choice is unavailable?
- How will you get there—and do you have enough fuel?
Step 5: Prepare Your Home for the Storm
When evacuation is imminent, protect your property:
- Board up windows and doors (5/8” exterior plywood is ideal)
- Place sandbags near doors and low windows
- Move loose items from the yard indoors
- Secure outdoor vehicles, boats, and large equipment
Step 6: Stay Informed
Track official updates from reliable sources:
- Bluffton Township Fire District
- U.S. National Weather Service – Charleston Office
- U.S. National Hurricane Center
- Local and national news outlets
Step 7: Maintain a Storm-Ready Home Year-Round
- Trim trees and shrubs to minimize storm damage
- Clean gutters and downspouts regularly
- Reinforce and lock garage doors
- Secure recreational vehicles and boats
Plan Ahead. Stay Safe.
