Evacuation Actions

Be Prepared

  • If you live in a vulnerable area, plan your evacuation route now.
  • Know how to safely drive 20 to 50 miles inland to reach a safe place.
  • Consider staying with family, friends, or in a hotel outside the evacuation zone.

Before You Leave Home

  • KNOW where you will go and share your plan with others.
  • STAY TUNED to local TV or radio stations for emergency updates.
  • CHARGE your mobile devices and pack extra chargers or power banks.
  • TURN OFF gas, electricity, and water at the main supply lines.
  • MAKE ARRANGEMENTS for pets—most public shelters do not allow animals.
  • FUEL UP and service your vehicles before the storm approaches.

Protect Yourself During the Storm

  • Stay informed with a battery-operated, hand-crank, or solar radio or TV.
  • Shelter in a secure, interior room on the first floor, away from doors and windows.
  • Be alert for tornadoes, which can occur during hurricanes.
  • If the eye of the storm passes over, do not go outside. Dangerous winds will quickly return from the opposite direction.
  • Limit non-emergency phone calls to reduce network congestion. Send text messages when possible.
