Smoke Alarm Support for Deaf & Hard of Hearing Residents

Deaf and hard of hearing residents face unique challenges when it comes to fire safety. Traditional smoke alarms may not provide the necessary alerting method to wake or notify someone during an emergency. That’s why devices commonly referred to as “bed-shakers” exist — to work alongside smoke alarms and provide critical alerts through vibration and flashing lights.

Through a partnership with Fire Safe South Carolina, qualifying South Carolina residents may receive this life-saving technology at no cost. While these devices are not smoke alarms themselves, they are designed to supplement working smoke alarms already present in the home. Once an applicant qualifies, their request is forwarded to the local fire department, and the South Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal assists in fulfilling the request.
