Bluffton, SC – (December 23, 2024) – Firefighters from Bluffton Township Fire District responded to a structure fire on Little Possum Lane late last night. At approximately 11:15 p.m., fire crews from Stations 30, 31, 33, and 35 were dispatched to the call for a possible outbuilding fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that a camper-type trailer was fully engulfed in flames. The fire was quickly brought under control, but not before it caused significant damage to an adjacent home. All occupants of the affected structures were able to safely evacuate, and there were no injuries.
Beaufort County EMS and Bluffton Police Department assisted firefighters at the scene. The last fire crew cleared the scene close to 1:00 a.m. The camper was a total loss, and fire investigators have determined that the fire was likely accidental and caused by an overloaded extension cord that was connected to a space heater, a reminder of the dangers of improper electrical use, especially during colder months.
“This fire serves as an important reminder for our community to take precautions when using extension cords and space heaters,” said Fire Chief Paul Boulware. “We urge everyone to ensure that extension cords are not overloaded and to avoid using them with high-wattage appliances. Taking these simple steps can help prevent fire risks and keep our homes safe.”
