BLUFFTON, S.C. (April 2, 2026) — After more than 28 years of dedicated service, Captain Joseph Dembeck has retired from the Bluffton Township Fire District.

Dembeck began his fire service career in 1997 as a volunteer before being hired full-time on Sept. 5, 1998. Early in his career, he was recognized as Rookie of the Year in 1999 and Firefighter of the Year in 2000 and again in 2006.

He earned his National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic certification on Sept. 20, 2002, expanding his ability to serve the community during medical emergencies.

Dembeck was promoted to Captain on July 1, 2010. In that role, he served as a company officer, leading crews and mentoring younger firefighters. Throughout his career, he was known for his steady leadership, strong work ethic and commitment to those he served alongside.

“Captain Dembeck’s career represents a long-standing commitment to service, professionalism and the Bluffton community,” said Fire Chief David Hindman. “We are grateful for his contributions to this organization and wish him all the best in his retirement.”

Dembeck was honored during a retirement ceremony on Tuesday, following his final shift. Family, friends, current firefighters and former colleagues attended to recognize his decades of service and the relationships he built throughout his career. As part of the tradition, Dembeck took his final ceremonial ride home aboard Engine 330.

“I’m grateful for my fire district family and the career you have given me,” Dembeck said. “I love you guys and look forward to what this next chapter holds for me. I especially look forward to spending more time with my family and helping to build our business.”

The Bluffton Township Fire District thanks Captain Dembeck for his years of service and dedication and wishes him the very best in his retirement.
