Bluffton, SC – (April 7, 2025) – When innovation meets collaboration, great things happen—and that’s exactly what happened through a recent partnership between the Bluffton Township Fire District and May River High School’s welding and engineering programs.
Under the leadership of welding instructor Mr. Brad Childress, students Sean Wasserman, Keith Wivagg, and Nolan Ingram spent several weeks fabricating a custom equipment organizer for the Fire District Rescue Squad. With guidance from Squad 38 firefighters Eric Ligeikis and Matt Ortiz, and design support from students in the school’s engineering program, the project quickly evolved from concept to reality.
The final product—a durable, thoughtfully designed equipment rack—was proudly presented and installed by the student team on Friday, April 4, at May River High School’s Welding Shop.
“This is exactly the kind of partnership that makes our community stronger,” said acting Interim Fire Chief Derek Church. “These students took on a real-world challenge, applied their skills, and delivered a finished product that will directly support our emergency operations. We couldn’t be more proud of their work.”
The project was made possible through the support of the Bluffton Firefighter Foundation, which provided funding for materials. The result? A hands-on learning experience for students, a custom-built tool organizer for first responders, and a shining example of what can happen when education and public service collaborate.
“This wasn’t just a school project,” added Firefighter Matt Ortiz. “It was a chance to show students how their skills can make a real difference—and they knocked it out of the park.”
The Bluffton Township Fire District is committed to supporting local students and schools through meaningful partnerships that build skills, confidence, and community pride. With projects like this, the future of the fire service—and the community it serves—has never looked brighter.
