FIRE EXPLORER PROGRAM

The Bluffton Firefighter Explorer program is designed for young men and women between the ages of 15 and 19 who are interested in a firefighting career. This fun, interactive program provides participants with opportunities to enhance their self-confidence and develop leadership skills through hands-on activities.

The Firefighter Explorer program is part of the state's Career and Technology Center Firefighter Program, a multi-organizational effort between the SC Fire Academy, SC State Firefighters' Association, the SC State Department of Education, and Beaufort County School District.

The Fire District works closely with the Bluffton High School to provide training and the development of high school students in the area of Emergency and Firefighting Services. With successful completion of both the course and national certification exams, participants can receive national firefighter certification.

Program Overview:

• The Explorer Program meets every Monday from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. during the school year.
• This is a voluntary program under the direct supervision of BTFD personnel.
• BTFD does not provide any compensation for program participation.
• Explorers will learn firefighting and other life skills.
• Explorers will gain experience and participate in training as well as ride-a-longs with BTFD personnel.
• Explorers will learn and become certified in First Aid and CPR.
• Explorers will participate in community service activities.

Fire Explorers are expected to abide by all BTFD administrative policies related to conduct and operating procedures. They are expected to work as a team, lead by example, and become confident in their abilities. Continuing enrollment in the Fire Explorer program is contingent on good behavior and academic eligibility.

NOTE: Selection into and completion of the Fire Explorer Program does not ensure future employment with Bluffton Township Fire District.
